A lot of people have ideas for innovative UU ministry. A lot. I mean, I’ve even got one I’m tossing around and I’m not even a minister. And I know just from talking with people that others have ideas too. But like myself, they might not know how to begin. They might not have all the skills needed – maybe they need advice on social media, on Internet based ministry, on funding, on publicity, on mission, on you name it.
And we’ve got so many people who have those skills, not in ALL areas, but in one or two. And who would be willing to share them to help get more innovative UU ministries running. I know I would be willing to help with the social media side, for example. I know there are groups of folks working on different aspects, like folks working on a crowdfunding platform for innovative UU ministries, and even though that’s great and needed and essential -there’s more to launching an innovative ministry than just funding.
We as a faith need a place where innovators can go and get nurtured. To learn and get those skills they need. To meet and network with other innovators, to share struggles and strategies and victories. Whether they be ordained or lay.
And a place that’s free to attend. Because, let’s face it, if someone’s got an innovative idea, they probably don’t have the funds to make it happen (because if they did, it would already be happening.)

So, why isn’t there some sort of Center for Innovation in UU Ministry out there? At one of our two seminaries? As a program of the UUA? We as a faith clearly need it and there are folks right now who have an idea that would not just change Unitarian Universalism, but could change the world. But they just aren’t able to get started.
Why can’t we make this happen? And why can’t we make this happen by the end of the year?
Hi Tim- I am the President of the Unitarian Universalist Society for Community Ministries (www.UUSCM.org). Community Ministries, both lay and ordained, are exactly the kind of innovative ministry you propose. There are hundreds of successful examples. Regrettably, the UUA tends to have a focus on congregational ministry, and community ministry doesn’t get much notice. Within UUSCM we maintain many resources to help people get started in innovative ministries. On our website, check out our Best Practices Guide.
